This unique crochet ornament is inspired from a classic Christmas Movie
Today’s project came from a pretty simple concept: creating an ornament that looked like falling rose petals.

About This Project
The Zuzu’s Petal Ornament happens to be the very last design in my Christmas series, the 2020 Crochet Spree. If you happen to be discovering it while the Spree is still going from November 27th to December 24th, 2020, be sure to enter the giveaway below! You can also see more details about the spree on this page.
“Zuzu’s Petals” comes from the classic Christmas movie It’s a Wonderful Life. In the movie, the main character(a father named George Bailey) gets to a low point in his life where he considers throwing everything away. Thankfully, an angel comes to stop him and shows him how big of a difference his life has really made.
To do this, George gets to see what his town would be like if he had never been born. While George doesn’t believe what is happening right away, one thing that really gets his attention is the fact that his young daughter’s(Zuzu’s) rose petals, which she gives him earlier in the movie, are missing from his pocket. The angel explains that of course if George no longer exists, then his children don’t, either.
I do NOT want to give away this whole movie, except to encourage you to find it and watch it if you never have before. But, there’s a pretty emotional moment when George finds his daughter’s rose petals again. The idea is that the rose petals, which seem so insignificant, represent how precious life and family really are.
So with all of that said, this ornament is a quick little project that I made to be a reminder of those same things on my family’s tree. I hope you enjoy it for yourself as well!
Materials Needed
To make your own Zuzu’s Petals Ornament, you’ll need”
- D/3.25mm hook
- <25 yards of fingering weight yarn
- Scissors
- Several beads to go in-between each petal
- Tapestry needle
- Thread or needle threader
For my ornament, I used WeCrochet’s Hawthorne Yarn in Burlingame. The color variations are so rich in this yarn, and I think all of the different hues add a lot of visual interest to the simple rose petal shape.
