It’s always a good time to crochet a pretty head scarf! A simple little triangle with ties that you can wear with your hair up or down. This one features trendy cottage-core vibes (that truly never go out of style!). I think you’ll love practicing the cluster stitch and having a pattern that you can grow to any size!

This is an advanced-beginner headband pattern because it uses crochet decreases as a part of the cluster stitch and requires comfort with the difference between working into the chain or working into “chain spaces.” However, since it is a small project, an ambitious beginner can complete it in just a few hours!

Crochet the Original Inspiration
This pattern was inspired by our slightly more complex Pretty Petals Square. A unique, lacy afghan square that is a wonderful addition to any project where you would use a square.

Materials Needed
- About 90 yards of a cotton yarn.
- You can use any weight yarn because you can continue the pattern on until you reach the measurement required for your size. I made one in 3 weight yarn and one in 4 weight yarn.
- A hook that is appropriate for your yarn weight. I used a 5mm hook for the worsted weight yarn and a 4mm hook for the DK weight yarn.

- This pattern is written in US terms
- Turning chains count as stitches
- The decrease listed in the pattern, dc3tog (double crochet three together) is also known as the cluster stitch!
Pattern Directions
To begin, ch4 and sl st to the first ch to make a ch4 ring.
Row 1
Ch 5 (counts as 1dc and a ch2) make 1sc into the ring.
Ch 2 and make 1dc into the ring.
Row 2
Ch3 (counts as 1dc) and turn your work. dc3tog (double crochet 3 together) in the ch2 space.
Ch3. Into the center ch3 space, work dc3tog, ch3, dc3tog all into the same space. Ch3 and work dc3tog into the next ch2 sp. Make 1dc in the 3rd ch of your starting ch5 from the prev row.
Row 3
Ch5, turn and make 1sc in the sp between the previous dc and the cluster stitch.
*Ch3, 1sc in the next ch sp* repeat between ** to the center ch sp. Ch3 and work another 1sc in the same ch sp to form the center point. Rep, ch3, 1sc in each available chain space, down the opposite side of your triangle. Ch3 and make 1sc between your last cluster stitch and starting chain from prev row.
Row 4
Ch3, turn and make 1 cluster stitch in the first ch sp. Ch3, cluster in each ch sp working towards the center point. Into the center point chain space, ch3 and work 1 cluster, ch3 and work another cluster all into the same ch sp. Continue working Ch3, cluster stitch for each available chain space and make 1dc in the 3rd ch of your turning chain from prev row.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until your triangle is about 9″ (48cm) deep, measuring from bottom edge to the tip of the center point, for the small adult size pictured. See table below for additional sizing.

Make sure to end on a “row 4” row before completing the border. In my worsted weight yarn, I got this measurement in about 16 rows. In the DK weight yarn, I did 18 rows.
Border
Begin making single crochets along the bottom edge of the scarf, about two single crochets for each row of the scarf.
Then, work single crochets along the shorter edges of the triangle. I worked one into each chain space, one into each cluster and one into each chain after a cluster stitch.
Into the center point chain space, work 2sc, ch2, 2sc to really highlight the point.
Straps
When you work back down to the opposite corner where you started, sl st into the first sc to complete the border. Before fastening off, make a chain about 15″ long to create one strap. Fasten off and reattach your yarn at the opposite corner to create another 15″ long chain for the second strap.
Final Thoughts
I hope you enjoy this pattern! Once you get used to the two row repeat, it’s such a fun project that is a great combo of mindless and engaging. You can use any yarn weight. I think an even lighter weight yarn would look lovely! You could also grow this triangle to a neckerchief size or even a full triangle shawl! Just repeat those two rows to your hearts content.
