If you’re here, you’re probably ready to start crocheting your first and favorite hat! Now at a glance, this pattern may look somewhat difficult, but it’s so much easy that you’d think. Even adding the pom pom to it can be done in minutes!

This free crochet pattern is specifically made for beginners who are crocheting their first ever hat or beanie! It uses two of the six basic stitches, which includes the slip stitch and the half double crochet stitch. If you’re still getting acquainted with these stitches, I highly recommend watching the video tutorials that we’ve also included in the posts as it’s important to get comfortable with these stitches before working on this pattern.

Another great and unique thing about this crochet pattern is the pom pom that’s been stitches on! There are different ways to make a pom pom, which I’ve linked above, but the easiest and quickest way to do it is through this pattern, which I’ll demonstrate in more detail below.

Crochet Ribbed Beanie With Pom Pom Pattern Direction

R1: ch 53, starting from the third ch from the hook, make 1 hdc in each sts
R2- R54: ch2(count as 1hdc), turn, make 1 hdc in each sts (use back loops only)

Total of 52hdc in each round

Crocheting the first part of the hat

Fold in half, then join the sides together by making slip stitch.

Folding the crochet hat in half
  • After joining the side, cut the yarn but leave a long tail for sewing the top part
  • Insert the yarn needle alternating each round so you can pull it to tighten
  • After tightening, put the beanie inside out

Making The Pom Pom

  • Use a 4inches wide cardboard
  • Wrap around the yarn 200 times to achieve a thick ball
  • Remove the yarn from the card then tie the middle part tightly
  • Cut edges, then trim sides (if necessary to make it round)
  • Sew the pompoms to attach to the beanie
