Crochet a Chic Granny Stitch Short Dress – Free Pattern

This granny stitch short dress is a stunning and simple summer project that is beginner-friendly, lightweight and chic, which is perfect of the summer months!

The granny stitch is one of my favorite stitches. It’s actually the most popular stitch here at Amelia Makes!

I love it because it’s great for garments, and it’s a style that can be crocheted for any time of the year. This is exactly why we crocheted this beautiful short summer dress!

It’s light, breezy, and can be worn as a day-to-day casual dress, or at the beach, a BBQ gathering with loved ones, or so on!

It’s also the perfect project for beginners to start this summer, because it’s easy to keep track of your stitch count.

Overall, the granny stitch uses the same basic pattern as the granny square. So you’ll need to know the basic stitches, especially how to chain and the double crochet stitch.

About the Granny Stitch Short Dress For Adults

This free pattern only uses the granny stitch technique for the entire dress. The neckline and armhole edges are started using a foundation chain, while the rest of the pattern is worked in granny stitch.

Unlike our popular granny stitch cardigan pattern, which is worked up in one piece, this pattern has some sewing involved around the armhole section. I’ll go into more detail about this in the “Pattern Directions” section.

Note: Unless you’re heading to the beach, I recommend wearing a nude-colored slip dress underneath for added coverage during casual outings!

Skill Level

As I mentioned above, the granny stitch uses the same basic pattern as a granny square, and is easy to pick up.

The main stitches that you’ll need to be comfortable with before starting this project are how to chain and the double crochet stitch.

This short dress is suitable for beginners who are comfortable with the basic stitches and are ready to take on crocheting garments!
