Crocheting sweaters are one of my favorite garments to make! They are practical, and depending on the type of yarn you use or the stitch technique, some can be worn all year round.

They can be crocheted for yourself, or a loved one as a meaningful gift and there’s something very rewarding about finishing a DIY project and then getting a lot of compliments when you wear it!

In this round-up, I’ve put together 25 free crochet sweater patterns of different styles, crochet techniques and skill levels. So there’s a pattern for everyone!

If you’re a beginner, you’ll find many beautiful crochet patterns here that are free and have a video tutorial that walks you step-by-step how to do it.

Lastly, to make this round-up easy for you to follow, I’ve segmented them from easy to intermediate level patterns so you’re able to go through the ones that suits your skill level.

How to Crochet a Sweater

When it comes to crocheting a sweater, there are a few important pointers:

  1. For example, there are different ways to crochet a sweater, some are crocheted in rounds, usually the top-down sweaters or the ones that are done in one piece. And other sweaters are crocheted in rows, like the granny stitch technique sweaters. In this round-up, I’ll be showing you a variety of different ways that sweaters and cardigans are crocheted and you’ll be able to practice the technique that you enjoy the most.
  2. Another important aspect of the sweater is the seaming. Now the sweaters that are crocheted in one piece do not require seaming, but most sweaters do. And you can learn the most effective ways to seam a sweater in this blog post.
  3. You will also need to learn how to weave in ends for garments. We wrote a great article that gives you four tested techniques that we tried and found to be the most effective for our crochet projects.
  4. Learning how to crochet ribbing. This is an effect method to use for the finishing of the sweater. It makes it look more clean and neat.
