Crochet Mermaid Tail Blanket With Ruffles – Free Pattern

A beautiful textured mermaid tail blanket that is made in one size, and a child’s favorite blanket to snuggle with!

If you have young daughters, or have relatives and friends that have young girls, then you’ve definitely heard them talk about fantasies and mermaids!

As a young kid, I absolutely loved mermaids, and my favorite cartoon was The Little Mermaid. There’s something about mermaids swimming in the open ocean and feeling free and empowered that grabs your attention when you’re a kid.

And for this reason, we decided to work on crocheting this beautiful mermaid tail blanket with an extra touch of ruffles, to give it a feminine feel to it. This project makes a sentimental Christmas gift for kids and adults!

About This Project

The crochet mermaid blanket with ruffles is a great project to make as a Christmas gift for a loved one. If you’re unsure what to crochet as a present for a little girl or a best friend, then you can never go wrong with making them a mermaid blanket!

It’s elegant looking, comfortable and everyone loves to show off a beautiful looking blanket at their home.

There are many ways to crochet a mermaid blanket, but we specifically chose to crochet it using the spider stitch technique. This stitch is very easy to learn, even as a beginner, because it only uses two basic stitches and gives it that knit-like feel to it.

By using the repeats of a chain stitch and single crochet stitch, you’ll get a thick and textured blanket that will keep you warm in the winter months.

Skill Level

This pattern is great for adventurous beginners. As a beginner, you’ll need to lean how to crochet the spider stitch, which is easy to do as it’s only the repeats of the two basic stitches.

However, you will also need to learn how to crochet ruffles for the tail and top part of the blanket. For that reason, I’ve marked this pattern for more experienced beginners who already have a few completed projects under their belt.

Materials Needed

  • 970 yards of worsted yarn in color 1 (light pink)
  • 750 Yards of worsted yarn in color 2 (light purple), plus a few yards for gathering up tail and seaming.
  • K/10.5mm hook (for tail)
  • H/5.00mm hook (for fin and top ruffle)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle (useful for weaving in ends). If you have frustration with weaving in ends (like many of us) then read my post on the four top tips that I’ve tested, and work, for weaving in ends.

Gauge

The gauge for most of this project (with 2 strands of yarn worked together and a K hook) is 10sts (just barely over 3 repeats) and 10 rows of spider stitch per 4” square.

The gauge for the tail fins and top ruffle of this project (with an H hook and only one strand of yarn) is 12sts and 7 rows of dc per 4” square.

Notes

  • This pattern is written in US terms

  • This tail is a “one size fits most”. It is suitable for adults but also makes a very cozy blanket for kids with the top portion folded down as needed.
  • Optional contrast row: If you want to add a little bit of extra interest in your mermaid tail, work a row of dc in the back loop only for rows 15,30, and 45.
