13 Unique Crochet Stitch Techniques That You’ll Love

This post will give you the inspiration and creativity to learn about special stitch techniques that are uncommon and beautiful.

After mastering the basic stitches in crocheting, you’ll come to see that there is a world of beautiful and unique stitch techniques out there that you’ll be eager to learn about.

Many of these stitches are perfect for making beautiful garments like sweaters, tops, belts, blankets and hats.

In this post, I’ve listed out 12 different and stunning stitches that will leave you feeling overwhelmed with inspiration.

Mastering the Basic Stitches

Before learning any new techniques, you’ll have to be familiar with the basic crochet stitches first. You’ll also come to realize that several of these unique techniques is a combination of basic stitches.

There are six basic stitches that will be your foundation in crocheting. I’ve listed them out below:

If you’re a beginner, make sure to take the time to practice these stitches before proceeding any further! I also provide a detailed video tutorial for each basic stitch to make it easier to follow!

Each stitch pattern that I listed below also comes with one or two free crochet pattern recommendations of mine in order for you to start practicing a pattern right away.

By the end of this post, you’ll walk away with more knowledge about the variety of different stitches that are out there, and the types of patterns that can be made with each of these stitches.

1. The Spider Stitch

The Spider Stitch has a sturdy and thick texture which is perfect to make in the winter season!

This stitch can be applied to a number of different patterns, however I love using this specific stitch to crochet sweaters. It’s thick, keeps me more and has a comfortable feel to it.

If you want to practice this stitch with smaller projects, then you can make our luxurious twist headband instead. It’s just as beautiful and is much faster to complete.


2. The Ruffle Stitch

Ruffles are the perfect add-on to a beautiful crochet project. It completed the outfit and makes it that much fancier!

They are definitely trending on tops and dresses, so by learning how to create ruffles, it can even turn an existing piece into a whole new outfit.

3. Crochet Really TALL Stitches

Crocheting really tall stitches isn’t very common, however they are definitely useful once you get the hang of it. It’s great to use when applying the lacy effect on a summer top or headband.

In this post, I go over the process of crocheting really tall stitches for three stitches:

  • double treble stitches
  • triple treble stitches
  • quadruple treble stitches

One free pattern of mine that applies this technique is my beautiful Dogwood flower.


4. Crochet Ribbing

Crochet ribbing is the perfect stitch to make for functionality. There are two methods to make it, depending on what project you’re making it for.

Here are some inspirational patterns that uses ribbing for making cuffs or adding it on edges of garments.



5. Crochet Jasmine Lace Stitch

A special floral looking technique that I made up myself. Inspired by the Jasmine Stitch, it resembles a two-dimensional version of it, but without the puff!

This techniques is for intermediate level crochets as you’ll need to be familiar with the Jasmine Stitch.

6. Catherine’s Wheel Stitch

This beautiful stitch that looks like shells gives it a special feminine pattern.

What’s also great about it is the main stitches that are uses are the two basic stitches: single crochet and double crochet.

Fingerless gloves look beautiful with this stitch and gives it that unique edge.


7. Crochet the Puff Stitch

The puff stitch is perfect for making mini crochet projects like flowers or a puffy granny square blanket that is very comfortable.

8. Crochet The Linen Stitch

This stitch that almost looks woven brings a beautiful texture to any pattern. And it’s also made out of alternating single crochet and chain stitches which is great for beginners to practice.


9. Crochet the Grit Stitch

The grit stitch is an easy stitch technique that is similar to the single crochet stitch but has a more unique texture to it.


10. The Griddle Stitch Corner-to-Corner

I love crocheting the griddle stitch. This texture is perfect for creating home projects, like the picture you see above.

This classic griddle stitch striped coaster will give you the inspiration to want to make it as I guarantee you’ll be getting compliments!

Another project that uses the griddle stitch is the textured bows. It’s a cute little project that gives a touch of cuteness to any project you add it to!

11. The Waffle Stitch

The waffle stitch is perfect to crochet for the winter garments and home projects like the washcloth picture above.

The thick and sturdy texture gives it a rugged look that will grab your attention!

A great project to start working on with this stitch is my waffle stitch fingerless gloves.


12. The Waistcoat Stitch

The waistcoat stitch is a minor variation of the single crochet stitch and provides a beautiful outcome!

13. Boxed Bead Stitch

I love the boxed bead stitch! It’s puffy, adorable and is perfect for making a project that has a variation of colors.

This stitch is also really cute to make as a baby blanket!
